idea innovation for startup founders

Sad that your Startup Idea already exists?

You have always dreamed about becoming a successful entrepreneur, and you have worked hard for many days over a fabulous idea of your business when you find out that your start-up idea already exists out there in the world, it really brings you down right? You feel sad and depressed that your hope of success is gone. If you are in a similar dilemma, this place is for you folks.

Let’s visualize the fact with some of the well-known examples, If you take Drop box, was it the first company to have online storage? No. if you take Yahoo, was it the first company to do search online? No. I mean, literally from car rental companies to airline to food industries to whatever, all great brands were not the first one, and why do you stop yourself from getting started?. If you just think like, “oh, somebody’s already doing this, so I am just going to sit back”, believe me, this is not the path to success. No, this is not the right path, that’s what this blog is all about, and I want to share with you folks today, how to choose an idea if your start-up idea already exists in the market.

If you are an entrepreneur starting off, or maybe you’ve built a bunch of companies and you are now ready to look at different ideas that you have around your passion and you went out to the market and you did some research and then you realize that, “oh, there’s somebody doing this’. This place is for you.

Here’s the deal, if you approach business where you believe that if something already exists that you can’t start it, that is the worst ridiculous idea. I have several companies that you use every day that when you think about it, there was already an existing solution out there kind of like theirs. Think about the common social media platform like Instagram, Snapchat and others, if their founders had thought that social media already exists, it would not have been the trending of the modern world. Think of transaction apps we use, if Google Pay was not invented just because there are tons of other companies example as PayPal. It would have never reached billions of people, and most common there are lots of travel websites like AirBNB, Trivago, MakeMyTrip, yet still, now there are new and trending travel websites launching every day. The idea remained the same, it existed, but the companies tried to approach it anyway.

So, how to compete with the product the already exists in the market, here’s the deal,

1. Have a unique product hook

You need to have a unique product hook. Like, if you go to a market, if you look at existing solutions, then you should figure out, what is the angle that I am going to take to be able to provide a solution that is differentiated, unique and a little bit different. It does not have to be complete revamp of the whole approach, but you need to figure out, what is the hook, what is the feature, how am I going to approach the problem, solve it in a unique way that is better, faster, cheaper, that will get a small percentage, maybe five percent to ten percent of the existing customer base to be willing to take a look and say like, “ you know what, I have this problem, I am using this existing company, but I am interested in an innovation to want to see what the other companies have out there to help solve this problem.” That is the first thing, the unique product hook.

2. Talk to existing customers

Number two, you need to talk to their existing customers. This is the part that excites me the most. If there is an existing market, let’s call it a 10 billion a year market. Do you know what that tells me? people are spending money, is that a good thing? Yes, So the existing market, existing competition equals a good thing. The beauty of that is you can talk to their customers. You can run Facebook, Google, etc ads to survey to their customers and their fan pages, think about it!.

I mean if you are trying to do customer research, instead of trying to wonder who has the problem. People that use this product probably have the problem, take for example E-mail marketing, do you know how many companies there are in e-mail space and so many entrepreneurs are like, “oh, I don’t want to touch that, it’s too complicated”, but if you have the product hook, and if you are aggressive about your idea, you go to the market and talk to existing costumers, so that is number two.

3. Caring for your customers

Number three is really caring is the ultimate competitive advantage. I cannot describe in words how important that is. When companies get big, they start building systems and processes and automation and they start getting disconnected from their core customers. They don’t act as they care anymore. I mean there is only handful of companies at a scale that can retain that culture, that approach, that belief and according to me, that is the ultimate competitive advantage for you and your business.

If you want to get into an existing market, if you have a passion for an idea and there are companies out there, you have just got to ask yourself “do I care more than those companies about solving my customer’s problem?”, if the answer is YES, then game on, go for it, don’t hold back. But if, you know what, if you step back and say, “I really don’t care about this space” then do not do it, Don’t go looking for a unique product hook, do not talk to existing customer, and by all means, if you are not passionate about it, then you cannot care, you won’t have that competitive advantage.

But those are the three areas that if you use  properly, you can go into any market and just think about every product you’ve ever used, there was an existing company going out there. Maybe they were doing a little different, but they existed. Believe in yourself, and you can do it.

10 Terrible Mistakes You’re Making With Online Ad Campaign

Online ad campaigns can be tricky. The internet has billions of users every day, so it’s only natural that it seems to be the perfect platform to simply place ads to get great results. Contrary to popular belief, there are several factors that can make or break an online ad campaign.

Consider this situation: You are running pay-per-click campaigns through search and social media platforms for your business. Though your ads are targeted at prospective customers, they aren’t fetching the revenue you had hoped. Or perhaps, your ads are doing alright, but you would like to take them a step further towards greater results.

Here are 10 Terrible Mistakes You’re Making With Online Ad Campaign which when fixed will give you brilliant results.

1) Choosing the wrong platform

Choosing the right platform is often the key to a successful online ad campaign. The biggest mistake you could make is to choose the platform that your audience uses most. Instead, pick the platform that best suits your product. Your aim should be to clearly advertise your product or service in a way that makes the most sense. For example, if you’re offering a service best explained through a video, YouTube ads may be the way to go.

2) Failing to diversify

Make sure you display your ads across multiple channels. Young consumers switch channel numerous times throughout the day. While your present channel may be performing fine, expanding to a multi-channel campaign will undoubtedly boost the potential reach of your advertising.

3) Having no call to action

An effective ad design will lead viewers to a decision on what to do. Always make sure that your online ad campaign has a specific instruction to follow. It could be as simple as “Click to learn more”. It is definitely important to allow people to see your brand across various channels, but having a proper call to action will solidify the purpose of your online ad campaign.

4) Ignoring your data

The advantage to running an online ad campaign is the provision of getting real time feedback. Do not make the mistake of ignoring this valuable information. The feedback gives you the details on engagement metrics, which ads are clicked and which are not and so on. This data will help in further modification of your advertisement so that it fetches the maximum possible revenue.

5) Mismanaging money

Be careful of both under-budgeting as well as wasting money. Advertisers often start with a small budget. While this is a safe option, a disproportionately small investment may undercut the success of your online ad campaign. Make sure your budget is enough to reach a considerable amount of your prospective consumers. However, you should also be careful not to publish ads on websites that do not attract much traffic. Track the effectiveness of your online ad campaign and drop advertisements on the websites that don’t deliver quality leads.

6) Not being viewer-friendly

Your online ad campaign should be able to capture the attention of your potential customers. The wrong way to do this is to use distracting and flashy texts, unexpected and imposing ads and other faux-pas. Instead, make your advertisement easy on the eyes. Let the consumer be drawn to your product or service in clean and elegant ad design. The aim is to simultaneously make your ad appear classy and user-friendly.

7) Poor placements

When you purchase advertising on a website, make sure you know where and how the ad will appear. Poor placement of your ads can undermine your growth and end up being a waste of money. Your advertisement should be visible to your potential consumers. Don’t forget to follow-up on your online ad campaign frequently as it will help you develop and modify your existing advertisements.

8) Spamming

Do not overwhelm your audience. Email marketing is an exceptionally useful tool. Make sure that you only market to people who have opted in to your mailings. Spamming will not reestablish the need for your product or service. Instead, unnecessary mailings will only ultimately hurt your business.

9) Stale advertising

A useful tip that leads to a successful online ad campaign is to change things up. The same old ad will not allow consumers to be intrigued or interested. While you can develop a trademark sign or slogan, try to switch up your usual theme for more fun and creative alternatives.

10) Having too many specifics

While it is definitely possible to make your online ad campaign seem too general, the opposite is much more common. To avoid either, make sure that your ad falls in a safe in-between zone. Moreover, using too many specifics can discourage potential consumers. Having a slightly large target audience can do wonders for the overall outcome of your advertisements.

Essential Tips for Growth Hacker Marketing

Growth Hacker Marketing (or Growth Hacking), simply put, is an umbrella term for all the strategies that focus primarily on growth. It is mostly used for small startups that aim to attract massive growth using a minimal budget. This form of marketing allows for a lot of experimentation, monitoring, analyzing and tweaking for yielding the most desirable results.

Growth Hacking is a relatively new, but very widely discussed strategy. When used in a creative yet logical fashion, it generates great success. Here are 12 Essential Tips for Growth Hacker Marketing that you need to know before you venture into this field.

1) Conduct A/B Testing Frequently

The importance of constantly conducting A/B testing cannot be stressed enough. A/B testing is a randomized experiment that includes the variants A and B. If something isn’t going right, the best way to identify and fix the problem is to test it against a variation. Ideally, you should test everything, but you should specifically attend to your landing pages, the home page, contact page and sales pages. These are the most conversion-heavy parts of your website; make sure your testing is targeted so that there is no chance for the results to be skewed or faulty.

2) Offer Discounts For Social Shares

Don’t ever ignore the potential that could be generated from millions of social media users from across the world. Promoting your brand through various social media platforms can definitely boost your progress and generate new leads for you growth hacking initiative. This can be done through social shares. While putting out a request may draw in people, others may expect some kind of profit or payoff at their end. Offering a discount on your social shares will resolve this issue.

3) Gamification Of Onboarding

A great tactic to develop your growth hacking initiative is to make onboarding a game. This can be achieved in two ways. One, you can reward your customers for completing a milestone. This gift could be catered to what your business is offering. As a result of this method, you’ll make it more likely for customers to revisit and hence lead to greater profits and an established audience. Two, you could offer a gift for customers who bring in new visitors. This approach will increase traffic and ultimately generate more leads.

4) Making Use Of Web Scraping

Some may remark that web scraping is an old-technique, but it can be extremely helpful in growth hacking. Essentially, web scraping is a method of extraction of data from any given website. While this may be quite a dated technique, the extracted data could help a lot in the future for the decisions taken for your business. As long as you adhere to copyright and privacy laws, this is a great method to find an edge over your competitors.

5) Take Up Social Media Automation

As mentioned before, social media is crucial in the development of your growth hacking initiative. However, being an active and all-encompassing entity on social media is extremely exhausting and time-consuming. This is where the magic of social automation comes in. With the help of social media automation apps and software, you can schedule your posts in advance. These tools will also monitor your account when someone mentions or comments on your brand.

6) Focus On Your Numbers First

The aim of growth hacking in itself is to reach the wisest possible audience in the shortest amount of time. A smart growth marketer, therefore, will focus on building this dream numbers first. Qualitative data like user feedback and costumer reviews are definitely important in the long-run but focus on these aspects after you’ve built enough traffic on your websites. The quantitative aspect ensures that you’re reaching new audiences, your product is being purchased and letting people know you exist.

7) Break Down Your Goals

A very important strategy you can adopt is to break down your primary growth goals into smaller, more accessible and achievable ones. It is definitely tempting to plunge yourself and your team into a huge milestone goal. However, a better idea would be to turn those into single, short-term but ambitious goals. This approach will allow your business to grow in a strong and steady fashion.

8) Get Creative With Your Funnel

You are free to bust out any and all creative methods to optimize your lead generation funnels, develop relationships with customers, or create brand awareness. Your techniques may be innovative and completely new in the growth marketing arena. Nonetheless, you can use a few established techniques. These include implementing SEO, allotting budget for online advertising, optimizing landing pages, investing in remarketing, and optimizing your marketing emails.

9) Test Everything!

It is essential for growth hackers to test every possibility across every field. It may be different for different businesses. Your experimentation should be logical, and the social media platforms you use to promote your brand should earn you those leads you want. Make it a point to test all your marketing strategies and hypotheses before choosing which ones earn the best revenue and which ones to dump.

10) Redesign Your Landing Page

If you’ve A/B tested everything and your conversions are still low, maybe it’s time to rejuvenate and redesign your landing page. Think about it — your landing page is what the audience associate you with. It has to represent your brand and be coherent with its theme and layout. Think about what would make customers stick around, and implement your ideas in a clean and focused style.

11) Get Interactive

An interesting and fun way to keep your audience both hooked and entertained is to create interactive content. You could achieve this by means of quizzes, questionnaires, infographics, animated videos and several other options. People absolutely love interacting with online content, and this strategy will definitely draw in new users.

12) Offer A “Freemium” Option

If by any chance you run a software or SaaS company, think about offering a free option. The benefit of doing this is that people get a taste of what you’re offering. A real experience is more likely to make visitors opt for the paid version. Nonetheless, there will always be a few costumers that remain rooted to the free plans, but that too will eventually benefit you. Offering a free plan will not only attract more paid customers, but it will also make it more likely for new people to try your services.

20 Outstanding Brain Hacks to help you manage your daily tasks

Everyone uses Brain hacks, some just work better than others. Brain hacks are highly useful tricks to keep your brain healthy. They not only speed up the decision making time, but they also motivate you and make your day as productive as possible. Here is a list of the 20 most outstanding brain hacks, tried and tested personally! Don’t believe us? Utilize them yourselves!

1. The 10/10/10 rule

The 10/10/10 rule is extremely simple. If you are not able to choose among two opposing options or make any decision, consider this: How would the decision affect you in ten minutes? Note down your answer, and then ask yourself how it would affect you in ten months. Lastly, ask yourself how the decisions impact you in ten years. Consider all your answers, and your decision will probably be simplified!

2. Artificial Deadlines

Another helpful tip when you have to make a decision is to set a deadline. Now, it is possible that the decision is not a particularly urgent one, and you are dreading making that choice. But in such a case, you will probably put off the whole idea of choosing. Hence, set a particular time in the day, say for example 6 o’clock. You might not be able to decide all day long, but chances are, the decision will be made in those 5 minutes before it strikes 6.

3. Suspension of Judgement

In suspension of judgement, you simply avoid forming opinions about anything that is not absolutely evident. Instead of saying that you know, or that you think, try saying that it seems, or it appears. This technique will prevent you from getting wrapped up in opinion based thinking. Instead, it will help you remain calm.

4. Distance yourself from the situation

When you can’t exactly pick a choice, or when you feel your brain struggling to figure out stuff, take a step back. It is as simple as that. Ever noticed when you are too close to a certain object, it is so blown up that you can’t see the whole thing in one frame? But when you step back, the entirety can be observed in one glance. It is the same logic as your brain.

5. Coin Flip Solution

Another amazing trick to make quick decisions. For any yes/no question, or when you have to choose one among two options, assign each side of a coin one option. In the second that the coin is spinning, you will know which one you want, or which side you actually hope will land face up. Another similar decision-making trick is to assign each hand one option and ask someone to choose one hand randomly. In those seconds, you will find which hand you want to be chosen.

6. Start with the Hardest Tasks first

Have you ever the quote “starting the task is half the battle already won”? Well, that is absolutely true. You just need the initial push. So when you complete the hardest task, in the beginning, you know that you can go ahead only to easier tasks. This is a great motivator.

7. Formulate your thinking in terms of positive statements

Instead of saying that you cannot do a certain tasks, it would help if you said that you can try to complete the task. Removing the “not” is a crucial step in everybody’s day to day conversations. Although this is a very cliché statement, always remember that “impossible” spells out “I am possible”.

8. Think of positive “What if” scenarios

A lot of people have the habit of jumping to conclusions and assuming the worst possible things. Everyone has these “What if” scenarios. And 99%, there are negative scenarios. If for example, for lack of better one, if you were called to the Principal’s office as a student… Instead of thinking, “What if I am going to get expelled?” Try thinking, “What if I’m going to get praised for my behavior?” Your outcome also will be the positive one once you implement this.

9. To-do lists

To-do lists are the oldest trick in the book. There is nothing more satisfying than crossing out an item from a list. In fact, you can add your own touches to it too. I would make columns for “job well done”, “job done averagely”, and “poorly done job”. Then I would tick the box that applied. It motivates you to get the most productive and well-done jobs from yourself.

10. Use Comparisons

When you have a long list of items to choose from, take the very first option as your stand by. Compare the first and second, and ditch the one which is glaringly worse. Make the winner your new standby. If there are any ones that you cannot choose amidst, write them down and use the coin flip trick as a secondary measure.

11. Setting maximum time periods

This only works for jobs that will take a maximum of two hours. Set out a time period and prepare yourself for it. Then in that time give your absolute 100% effort and potential. Instead of giving half-hearted attempts over five hours, giving you 100% effort for even half an hour, will give you much better results.

12. Asking yourself questions

Can you not decide where you want to go to eat dinner? Try this: ask yourself what type of cuisine you want to enjoy? Ask yourself whether you want to be closer to home, or you want to drive a long time? Ask yourself whether you’re looking to spoil yourself, or be stingy with the cash. And then, the answers to the questions will narrow down options for you. Then use previous methods to select among the limited options.

13. Pretend you are the protagonist of a novel

Are you not sure what to do next? Picture yourself as the main character of a book, or the hero of the film. What would he do now? Why should he do it, and what would be the next possible prediction? Act accordingly, you’re the main character of your own life anyways!

14. Think about how finishing the task will make you feel

A great motivation tip! Before doing a task, you will always feel burdened, and dread doing it. Instead, think of how relieved you will be once you know you no longer have to do it, how very free you would be! That will most certainly motivate you to get the job done.

15. Use earphones, or ear plugs in any noisy environment

Noise is hardly ever favorable or conducive to working or even studying. By plugging your ears, you are not only blocking out all this noise, but it becomes comfortable after a while. It places you in your own sweet bubble, which won’t burst until you choose to burst it.

16. Trouble Shooting

When your computer is not working, you try to troubleshoot it right? Troubleshoot attempts to narrow down the problems to half, by solving as many as possible. When you feel your life getting too cluttered up, try and troubleshoot your life. Find as many solutions as you can so that you can de-clutter your mind.

17. Complete 5 minute favours

This is a particularly helpful tip when you are annoyed and angered, either by yourself or at anyone in general. Take a break and try to help somebody. It could be strangers, it could be family, it could be donating money, it could also be logging on to Quora and providing as accurate an answer as you possibly can.

18. Temptation Bundling

Combine a certain reward with your completion of a certain task. This is equivalent to classical conditioning. For example, if a child loves chocolate, place one chocolate after every ten pages of the textbook. Upon studying those many pages, the child learns to reward himself. This, however, does backfire sometimes, especially when your brain is clever enough to suggest having the reward, without completing the work.

19. Clear your “Stress box” regularly

You are living in the 21st century. You probably have an email account. In such a case, you know that certain emails go straight to your spam and even these, you have to clean up occasionally. Well, your life is your email account. Unsubscribe from what brings you stress, clear out your stress box every week or so, and keep your system updated to function most productively.

20. Use your laziness productively

This one is my personal favorite. Do you find that Instagram devours your productivity time? Simply uninstall the app. That means you will have to use the web version of it, which takes time to load and is not half as good. Or if you are always binging on food, ask somebody to keep the food at an unreachable level. Then you will have to carry a ladder to attain those sweets, and hopefully, your laziness will prevent you from going to that extent!

If any of these hacks have personally helped you, or if you have some other tricks up your sleeves, feel free to share your experiences with us in the comments below! Hope you have an extremely invigorating session with your brain!

Draftss: Year in Review (2019)

Hey Readers,

Here we are with some year ending stats of 2019. We had a wonderful year at with some major growth, learnings, and setbacks. We shall try to elaborate each of them below starting with some introduction and numbers:

Draftss is a productized unlimited graphic design & frontend code service on a weekly subscription. Draftss covers services from Logo Design, Branding, Illustrations, Social Media Graphics, Web Design, App Design, UI/UX, Frontend coding, WordPress and just about everything else there is within Design. The designs subscription starts from $89/week.

Stats for 2019

$66k ARR

54 clients

8267 designs created

114 pages coded

Learnings throughout the year 2019

While there were several successes throughout the year, there were more setbacks as compared to the successes. I think it’s apt that we focus on the mistakes that we made throughout the year and the learnings that we gained out of it.

Annual Pricing

The first and foremost mistake that comes on top of my mind was having an Annual Pricing on our website giving the user an impression that our service was pretty expensive. We had initially launched with 2 pricing options of Monthly Pricing and Annual Pricing for Design Plan. Our monthly Design plan costs $349/month and our annual Design plan costs $3490/year. For a customer visiting the website would find the amount to be too excessive to be purchased in the first instance. Ideally, the visitor wouldn’t consider purchasing an Annual plan without testing our services thoroughly with our monthly plans.

We did receive a few inquiries for the annual plans but none of them converted into annual customers. We tried upselling the annual plans to our existing customers, but the resulting amount was pretty significant for startup founders to commit at one go. We eventually learned that B2B companies and other design agencies are more suitable for Annual plans.

P.S. We have a few customers that we have been working with for more than a year but have been paying for monthly subscriptions.

Payment Partner Mishap

Often when your service providers make an upgrade, it’s pretty exciting to see new features and make the most out of your current provider. However, in our case, every time there was an upgrade, we faced some new issues. In one instance, they were unable to capture new payments for around 15-25 days. We didn’t even know such an issue occurred till a customer emailed us that she was trying to sign up but her payment kept failing. After constant follow-ups with the payment gateway provider, it took around 20-25 days to get the issue resolved.

In a separate incident where our service provider made an upgrade, they were unable to auto-renew the subscriptions of our existing customers for 10-14 days. So customers whose subscription got expired within this period enjoyed a week of service due to the non-billing of our payment provider. We switched to Paddle during this incident, but they shut down our account abruptly quoting “We do not support human services” even though we had discussed with their support team about our productized service before moving 50% of our clients to Paddle.

P.S. We are still using the same provider to date. However, since Stripe is now available in India, we might switch to Stripe soon.

How did we figure that we were proceeding in the wrong direction?

We participated in Startup School 2019. This participation has been one of the most productive things that we have done this year. Speaking to other founders made us some serious errors that we made. Learning from these mistakes we made some major reformations in the company one of them being shifting a full-time team to a partially local remote team.

Some other major learnings from this participation:

  • All founders are struggling. Some founders are struggling with the product-market fit, while others are struggling with growth or hiring. Just make the most out of every day and it will be a gradual success over the course of time.
  • Discussions lead to a whole new world of ideas and tactics that you can implement in your startup.
  • The synergy between founders can go a long way in helping build each other’s brand.
  • Give back to the community to mould the ecosystem.
  • Learn from your competitors.

P.S. We are participating in Startup School 2020.

Shifting to a New Office

Learnings over the course of the year helped us make appropriate decisions. This included having a partially remote team which also helped up cut down on the office and administration expenses. Currently, the founders, sales, operations, live chat, and some designers & developers work full-time from our office. Remaining designers & developers are local and work remotely and visit office occasionally only when required.

P.S. Real-estate is pretty expensive in Mumbai even as per global standards.

Hiring Dilemma

Hiring was also a pretty challenging task for us. We have been very choosy with having the right person to work with our team. This meant that anybody who qualified to be a good designer didn’t necessarily mean that we had them on board unless they sync with the social environment within the company.

We have been evaluating the candidates via Behance/Dribbble along with a few local hiring platforms to find the right fit for Draftss. After the preliminary examination, we give the designers a short design test. This test often comprises of a live project which we receive from our clients with the actual design brief and then evaluate the designer’s submissions.

For developers, we have one standard code test that we ask all developers to code and then we evaluate the developer’s submissions before meeting them at our office personally.

If we are unsure about a candidate’s skill-set, we give them additional tasks to ensure we are definitely hiring the right fit for the company.

P.S. All live-test projects are paid.

Friction without our own Dashboard

We do not have a Draftss Dashboard for our clients at present. We manage all projects using third-party tools like Trello, Airtable, Basecamp, Asana, etc. We feel that it’s better to use a tool that the client is already using to manage their day-to-day projects. This way client wouldn’t have to use a new tool that he is not familiar with and we will not have to develop, manage and upgrade the dashboard to fit our needs. We have our dashboard ready but we are still unsure if we should launch our dashboard or not.

P.S. Internally, we use Google Sheets & WhatsApp to manage all design projects.

Failed to Launch Projects

In 2019, we built several projects. But due to circumstances and time constraints we were unable to give sufficient time to these projects to make the most out of it:

Projects Launched
Projects to be launched in 2020
  • Draftss Dashboard
  • Feedback Annotation SaaS
  • Reviews on the best landing page
  • Free vector Illustrations for Startups
  • – Lead email finder and email verifier SaaS
  • – Auto-design SaaS
